Why SSD is faster than HDD?

Before knowing that let us see what is actually HDD and SSD are?
HDD
  • In older days Hard Disk Drive is used as the storage device.
  • Hard disk drives store the data based on the mechanical movement of parts it consists of a disk drive that stores the data and a magnetic nail which helps to perform a read and write operation in HDD.

  •  It can often store multiple data like photos, videos, boot programs, software programs, etc.
  • In the older days, most of the PC and laptops came with HDD which stores the boot program.
  •  It is cheap and it can store large amounts of data when compared to SSD.
The main disadvantage of HDD is it reads or writes the data in a slow manner it is because of the mechanical movement of parts present in the HDD.

SSD
  • Solid State Drives are also used as a storage device but it is a new generation storage device.
  • Solid State Drives store the data on the integrated circuit chip called NAND flash memory.
  • There are no moving parts in the SSD and all the memory chips and controllers are integrated into the single card.
  • It is expensive.
  • In recent days, most of the laptops come with SSD which have faster boot time and faster data retrieving capability.
The main disadvantage of SSD is its cost and the main advantage of SSD when compared to HDD is its booting time.

From the Above points, It is clear that Why SSD's are faster when compared to HDD?
  • SSD's are faster because it has no moving parts as it is like in the HDD.
  • SSD consumes lower power when compared to HDD.
  • SSD stores the data on NAND cells of memory chip called NAND flash memory which is faster enough when compared to HDD.
  • The controller which is present in the SSD has an exact memory address of each data which helps us to access our data faster access when compared to HDD.
  • SSD is compact when compared to HDD.
  • The booting time of SSD is higher when compared to HDD.
These are the reasons why SSD is faster when compared to HDD.

I know!! what you are going to ask?

Why NAND cells are used for SSD storage instead of using other types?

The most standard type of flash memory chip is used for most of the storage devices like SD cards, USB drives and SSD's it is because of NAND memory cells(flash memory) are non-volatile memory which doesn't lose their memory even when the power is not given to it.

This is why NAND flash memory is used for most of the storage devices.
